After Petra, Jerash (ancient Gerasa) is the second most visited tourist site in Jordan and one of the world’s largest Roman sites. Extensive remains of the ancient city ramble over a rolling plain near the modern town and there is still a lot to uncover.
Gerasa was first developed by Hellenistic Greeks in the 3rd-century BCE. The Romans made it a major city and a member of the Decapolis, ten powerful city-states on the eastern fringes of the empire. Gerasa had a population of 20,000 at its height in the 2nd-century CE.
Visitors can watch reenactments of gladiator fights and chariot races in the hippodrome most days. Each summer (usually three weeks in late July-early August) the renown Jerash Festival, an arts festival with theater, music and dance performances, is staged among the ruins.
