We’re looking for the name of the modern city known for Byzantine mosaics. As in most of our Jordan tours, a visit to this site is often combined with Mt. Nebo (the traditional burial site of Moses), and one of the crusader castles of Kerak or Shobak, among other attractions along the Kings Highway between Amman and Petra. By the 5th century, there was a significant Christian population in the city and most of the recovered mosaics have been found in the ruins of ancient churches. The town lay abandoned for almost 1,000 years, until the late 19th century, when it was resettled by Arab Christians. The first mosaics were discovered as they mined the ancient rubble to build their new town. In 1896, the city’s most famous mosaic, a 6th-century map of the holy land, was found. Steady excavation and preservation of mosaics has continued ever since.
