The Greek Cycladic Island of Ios is a magnet for the youthful, international party set. The main town, Chora, is a quintessentially Cycladic village, with whitewashed, cubic buildings spilling down a slope to the blue-green Aegean, blue domed churches and windmills. Nights are festive, with pulsing discos and tavernas overflowing into the cobbled streets. A diverse selection of beaches, many with velvety, golden sand, offer a choice of daytime vibes. Some beaches, like Mylopotas, carry on the party right through the day, with plenty of bars, restaurants and watersports on hand. Others, like Loretzaina, are secluded and peaceful.
Literary morsel: according to legend, the poet Homer died on Ios and rests in a tomb in the northern part of the island overlooking the gulf of Plakotos.
There is no airport on Ios but frequent ferries are available from Athens and many islands, especially among the Cyclades, like Santorini, Mykonos and Paros.
