Located near the town of Kalambaka in central Greece, Meteora is a group of Greek Orthodox monasteries clinging to the tops of massive rock formations in the Plain of Thessaly.
In the 11th century, Christian hermits began to take shelter in caves in the rocks. In the 13th century, monks began building permanent structures and over the next several hundred years more than 20 monasteries were built.
Today, the six surviving monasteries are open to visitors. Inside you’ll find a few monks and nuns and important collections of frescos, manuscripts and icons.
Meteora is more than 5 hours from Athens, so you’ll want to overnight in Kalambaka, the small town at the foot of the rock towers.
