This scenic mystery site is located on Mt. Parnassus, about 3 hours northwest of Athens.
To the ancient Greeks, it was the center of the world, initially sacred to Gaia, the great mother, and an oracle site guarded by the monstrous Python.
After the god Apollo killed the Python, he took over the oracular duties, speaking through his priestesses, the Pythia. The site was also known for the
Pythian Games, similar to the original Olympic Games. The extensive remains are mostly from the 6th-century BCE and are scattered on several terraced
levels right down the side of the mountain. A small museum holds artifacts found at the site.
