TUESDAY NAFPLION
Drive the historic coast road to Corinth. On the left, as the Saronic Gulf comes into view, lies the Island of Salamis, scene of the greatest sea battle of ancient times. On the right pass Eluesis and Megara. Make a short stop at the Corinth Canal to view this engineering marvel. Originally the dream of the Roman emperors Caligula and Nero, the job proved too difficult even with the labor of hundreds of slaves. The project was resumed in the 19th century, and between 1881 and 1893 French engineers blasted through 285 feet of sheer rock to complete the canal. Continue to the beautiful Peloponnese and the ancient city of Mycenae, the center of one of Europe's earliest civilizations. According to legend, King Agamemnon led his Greek warriors from Mycenae to engage the Trojans in a war that lasted 10 years. Drive through the Acropolis of Argos and the ruins of Tiryns to the charming harbor of Nafplion. From Nafplion, proceed to the great Theatre of Epidauros and the ruins of the Asklepion (ancient health center). Arrive at your hotel for dinner and overnight.
WEDNESDAY OLYMPIA
Drive across the Central Poleponnese and the region of Arcadia, the home of Pan and the Nymphus, and the towns of Tripoli and Megalopolis.
Continue to Olympia, the cradle of the Olympic games. Visit the Sanctuary of Olympian Zeus and the museum. Arrive at your hotel for dinner and overnight.
THURSDAY DELPHI
Cross the plains of Eliad and Achaia and drive through the city of Patras, capital of the Peloponnese. Take a car ferry across the "Little Dardanelles" from Rio to Antirio. Drive via the picturesque Nafpaktos and stop at the seaside area of Erantini for swimming, if conditions allow. Arrive in Delphi, nestling in the mountains of Parnassus with an unforgettable view across acres of olive trees as far as the Gulf of Corinth. Delphi was the site of the famous Oracle of Apollo where states and individuals sought advice. Visit the Catalia Springs and the Sanctuary of Athena Pronaia.
