Can you name this Greco-Roman city in western Turkey that is not Ephesus? Like Ephesus, it is a highlight of many of our Turkey tours. Like Ephesus, it is one of the seven churches in the Book of Revelation, and as such, is usually included in Christian pilgrimage tours of Turkey. Also like Ephesus, it was a large, important city with a large, important library. Most of the city’s remains are on its acropolis, 1,000 feet above the valley floor. While the excavated remains here are not nearly as extensive as those of Ephesus, the dramatic location really adds that WOW factor. Marble remains are scattered around a mountain top that drops off rather abruptly. White columns soar against the sky. The theater, which claims to be the steepest in the world, looks to be clinging to the hillside for dear life.
