Many of our Turkey tours include a visit here, an area in central Turkey known for fantastical rock formations, rock-cut churches and underground cities. It’s not so much a ‘site’ as a region that we’re looking for.
Within the region, there are multiple distinct sites and one could spend days and days and days exploring. For those with only a day or two, these sites capture the some of the best of what there is to see: The Goreme Open Air Museum is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with other-worldly scenery and the largest concentration of Byzantine, rock-cut churches, many with gorgeous frescos. The churches, and other dwellings, were carved into the soft volcanic ash formations, shaped by millions of years of erosion. The Zelve Open Air Museum has fewer churches than Goreme but lots of cone formations and “fairy chimneys” spread across three beautiful valleys. Also in the region, the subterranean city of Derinkuyu is 200 feet deep, with 8 levels. It’s only one of dozens of underground cities used as refuge from various invaders over many centuries.
