With the world opening back up and the travel industry waking after a year and a half of fitful slumber, we thought it was a good time for a series of posts about the basics of selling Ya’lla destinations. These posts will be directed at travel agents, our primary clients and partners in providing travel services. Posts will provide the Where, Why and How of our destinations in a nutshell format for those who have never sold them or need a refresher. Of course, we’re just a call or email away with more in-depth or specific answers to help you sell our destinations and our services.
WHERE IS JORDAN?
Jordan is in the heart of the Middle East bordering Israel and the West Bank on the west, Syria to the north, Iraq to the east and Saudi Arabia to the east and south.
Jordan’s main attractions for tourists lie in a ribbon of territory hugging the western border from north to south, so are very easily accessible.
HOW TO GET TO JORDAN?
Jordan’s international airport is in Amman, the capital city of about 4 million, located in the northwest of the country. Many major airlines fly into Amman.
Jordan is often combined with Israel and crossing the Israel/Jordan border is generally a routine procedure.
Jordan’s Red Sea port at Aqaba is a gateway to the country for cruisers, most often for daytrips to Wadi Rum or Petra.
WHY VISIT JORDAN?
We’re going to concentrate on the TOP SITES here but there’s plenty more to see.
PETRA
By far the most visited tourist site in Jordan, Petra is an ancient city built by the Nabateans. The most recognizable building in Petra is the Treasury, which stands at the city’s entrance, but beyond this awesome building lie hundreds of tombs, temples and a theater carved into the red sandstone canyon walls. This is a large site that requires a lot of walking to see well and we highly recommend agents qualify their clients in this regard. Our published tours spend a full day at Petra but enthusiasts can easily spend several days exploring Petra.
WADI RUM
Wadi Rum (Valley of the Moon) is a desert area in the south of the country with massive rock formations (the new Dune movie was filmed here). It’s very scenic and worth at least a few hour’s 4-wheel drive exploration, which is included in several of our published tours. Additionally, there are organized tent camps with en suite bathrooms and multi-course meals prepared on site for travelers interested in spending more time in this incredible landscape.
JERASH
Jerash is a large ancient Roman city north of Amman. Depending on the level of interest, our travelers spend 2-4 hours at Jerash.
MADABA & MOUNT NEBO
The city of Madaba is famous for Byzantine mosaics, especially the 6th-century map of the Holy Lands, which is part of the mosaic floor in St. George’s Greek Orthodox Church.
Six miles west of Madaba, is Mount Nebo. Traditionally, this is the place from which Moses glimpsed the Promised Land and then died. It’s an evocative spot, with wide views over the Dead Sea/Judean Desert area of Israel. The Moses Memorial Church on site houses many beautiful, ancient mosaics. Generally 2-3 hours is enough time to visit both sites. Madaba and Mount Nebo are usually visited en route between Amman and Petra and/or combined with a few hours or a night or two at the nearby Dead Sea.
THE DEAD SEA
The Dead Sea makes up part of the border between Israel and Jordan. It’s central to many Jordan attractions and is a great place for a few hours’ stopover for floating and mud-bathing or a few days of rest and relaxation. At over 1,400 feet below sea level on its surface, the Dead Sea is the lowest spot on earth. It’s a special place with unique atmospheric conditions and healing, mineral-rich mud and water.
