This 6th-century building is a highlight of many of our Turkey tours. It was built originally as a Christian cathedral on the orders of the Roman emperor Justinian. The building represents the best of Byzantine architecture and generally has been one of the most architecturally influential buildings of all time. In the 15th century, after the Ottoman conquest of Constantinople (Istanbul), the building became a mosque. Since 1935, it has been a museum.
Situated in the Old City of Istanbul, the building dominates the city’s skyline. In our Turkey tours, visits to this site are usually combined with the Blue Mosque, which sits at the opposite end of the Roman Hippodrome.
