Remains of the ancient city lie about an hour&#8217;s drive west of Athens on the isthmus connecting the Peloponnese Peninsula to mainland Greece. Major development of the city began in the 8th century BCE. With ports on the Corinthian Gulf and the Saronic Gulf, Corinth became wealthy and powerful, and gained a reputation for decadence. The ornate Corinthian Order (column) reflects the city\u2019s extravagance at its peak.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_546\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-546\" style=\"width: 440px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-546\" src=\"https:\/\/www.yallatours.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/corinthian-order.jpg\" alt=\"Corinthian order\" width=\"440\" height=\"445\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-546\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Corinthian order capital (top part of a column)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Ancient attempts to dig a canal across the isthmus were unsuccessful. In the 7th-century BCE, a paved ramp was built so ships could be moved overland, to avoid sailing around the Peloponnese. In the late 19th century the canal was finally built, but at only 70 feet across, it&#8217;s too narrow for most modern seafaring traffic.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_545\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-545\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-545\" src=\"https:\/\/www.yallatours.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/corinth-canal.jpg\" alt=\"Corinth Canal\" width=\"600\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.yallatours.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/corinth-canal.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.yallatours.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/corinth-canal-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-545\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Corinth Canal<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Many visitors to Corinth are interested in its biblical significance. Paul the Evangelist established a church there and visited several times.
