It&#8217;s located just 5 miles from Naxos across a windy choppy channel, which is excellent for windsurfing and kiteboarding. Paros beaches frequently host international windsurfing events.<\/p>\n<p>Since antiquity, Paros was known for the fine, translucent-white marble mined from the island&#8217;s interior mountain. Today the mines are closed but Parian marble buildings, monuments, statues and streets still stand all over Greece and around the Mediterranean.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4342\" src=\"https:\/\/www.yallatours.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/paros-parikia-agios-konstantinos-church.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"403\" \/> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4344\" src=\"https:\/\/www.yallatours.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/paros-parikia-alley.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The main village of Paros, <strong>Parikia<\/strong>, is situated on the western coast and is a hub for Aegean ferry traffic. This lovely town manages to be both lively and mellow, with plenty going on but no urgency to be found. Visitors are welcomed like old friends.\u00a0 Restaurants serving just-caught seafood line the busy port and provide front-row viewing of the fishing boats as they come and go. Aimless wandering in the bougainvillea-draped Cycladic streets is the best way to experience Parikia. You&#8217;ll find lots of fun shops, friendly locals and not as many tourists as nearby Mykonos.<\/p>\n<p>Don&#8217;t miss the 4th-century Panagia Ekatontapilani (Church of 100 Doors), built on the order of St. Helena, the mother of the Roman emperor Constantine, according to legend.<\/p>\n<p>Manto\u00a0Mavrogenous, heroine of Greek independence, lived on Paros. As a wealthy young woman, she financed land and sea campaigns\u00a0against the ruling Ottomans and lobbied her rich friends across Europe to support the revolution. Her house in Parikia\u00a0is a historical monument.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4341\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4341\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-4341 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.yallatours.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/naousa-paros2.jpg\" alt=\"Naousa, Paros\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4341\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Naousa, Paros<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>On the north coast of the island, the fishing village of <strong>Naoussa<\/strong> maintains its authentic character while catering to crowds of tourists. Pick any one of the many restaurants that cluster around the postcard-perfect port and you&#8217;re sure to have a superb,\u00a0thoroughly Greek meal. Follow any street into the inner village to find the cheery embrace of Cycladic buildings perfectly packed around gentle, marbled alleys.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4355\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4355\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-4355\" src=\"https:\/\/www.yallatours.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/paros-lefkes-village.jpg\" alt=\"Lefkes, Paros\" width=\"600\" height=\"399\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4355\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Lefkes, Paros<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Drive (or take a bus) about\u00a07 miles inland from Parikia to <strong>Lefkes<\/strong>,\u00a0a beautiful little mountain village, a world (and seemingly\u00a0a few centuries)\u00a0away from the bustle of the coast. Lefkes\u00a0looks out over the island from\u00a0its perch at 1,000 feet. Cars are not allowed inside the village but there are parking lots on the perimeter.\u00a0Neat Cycladic\u00a0and Venetian buildings\u00a0ease down the hillside at the foot of the\u00a0tranquil, no-nonsense\u00a0Church of Agia\u00a0Triada,\u00a0which watches\u00a0over the town like a mother hen.<\/p>\n<p>For hikers, the Byzantine Road is an easy walk on a section of one of\u00a0the 1,000-year-old paved roads that\u00a0connected Lefkes, then the capital, to points around the island. The best-known walk is\u00a0from Lefkes\u00a0eastward to the village of Prodromos, about 2.5 miles. For a longer walk, carry on another 4 miles (approximately)\u00a0eastward from Prodromos\u00a0through Marpissa\u00a0to the coastal village of Piso\u00a0Livadi.
