The apostle Paul traveled there extensively during his missionary journeys establishing some of the earliest Christian communities and he wrote many of his epistles to communities in Anatolia.<\/p>\n<p>Here below are some of the Christian sites in Turkey typically included in a pilgrimage in the footsteps of Paul and the early Church.<\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3>ANTIOCH<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Antioch<\/strong> on the Orontes was an important Hellenistic and Roman city where Paul was based during his missionary journeys. The apostle Peter also spent time in the city and became the first Bishop of Antioch.\u00a0 According to tradition, followers of Christ were first called Christians in Antioch. Antakya is the modern Turkish city on the site.<\/p>\n<p>St Peter\u2019s church in Antioch is built around a cave that <strong>might<\/strong> be where Peter preached to the city&#8217;s first Christians within a decade of the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus. Behind the 19th-century facade, the oldest surviving parts of the church date to 4th century.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-3838 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.yallatours.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/antioch-StPeters.jpg\" alt=\"The original cave church of St. Peter's Church in Antioch is among the oldest Christian sites in Turkey.\" width=\"600\" height=\"432\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>TARSUS<\/h3>\n<p>Paul the apostle (Saul of Tarsus) was born in<strong> Tarsus<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Paul may well have walked this Roman road outside of Tarsus.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-3849 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.yallatours.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/tarsus-roman-road.jpg\" alt=\"Tarsus is one of the important Christian sites in Turkey because it is the birthplace of St. Paul.\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>ST. THECLA CHURCH<\/h3>\n<p>The ruin of the 5th-century <strong>St. Thecla Church (Aya Tekla) <\/strong>stands on a hilltop near the town of Silifke (ancient Seleucia). Then he claimed the ancient Greek city of Byzantium as his capital and<br \/>\nrenamed it Constantinople. After the fall of Rome, the eastern Roman empire carried on for<br \/>\nanother 1,000 years, known as the Byzantine Empire. In the 15th century, Constantinople fell<br \/>\nto the Ottoman Turks and became Istanbul. For a thousand years, <strong>Istanbul<\/strong> was the official center of<br \/>\nChristianity and the city still boasts some spectacular remains from that period.<\/p>\n<p>The Byzantine Emperor Justinian built <strong>Hagia Sophia <\/strong>in the 6th century and it was the largest church in<br \/>\nthe world for 1,000 years.
